Meet Dr. Peter D. Gold

Practicing in the same building in Schenectady that his father did for over 40 years, Peter D. Gold, D.D.S., has continued the family legacy of using advanced dental techniques to provide compassionate care. For the last 30 years, Dr. Gold has sought new techniques, methods, and technologies to benefit the oral health of his patients and provide long-term results. Since graduating from Georgetown University School of Dentistry he has logged over a thousand hours of continuing education. As a member of the Seattle Study Club-a community of dentists dedicated to improving dentistry through continuing education-Dr. Gold exchanges knowledge with, and learns from, some of the brightest cosmetic and restorative dentists in the world. This exchange allows him to provide his patients with the most advanced techniques in the fields of general, implant, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. Dr. Gold is also a member of The Ellis Hospital Implant Study Club, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The American Dental Association, and The New York State Dental Association. He has served on the boards of The Fourth District and Schenectady County Dental Societies.

Air Abrasion

Those patients who break into a cold sweat as soon as they hear the sound of the drill can rest easy when they visit Dr. Gold's office. We proudly offer air abrasion, a technology that sprays tiny abrasive particles onto the teeth to remove decay without the use of drill. Not only does air abrasion cause less anxiety than drilling, but it also takes less time. A truly all-purpose technology, we use it to:

PICASSO Soft Tissue Laser

The PICASSO soft tissue laser is used for soft tissue surgery, often to trim back the gums to uncover a beautiful smile. This innovative tool of laser dentistry allows Dr. Gold to perform more precise cuts with less recovery time for the patient.

The PICASSO soft tissue laser offers a quick and painless way to fix a gummy smile. Used for the procedure known as soft tissue recontouring, or gum lifting, PICASSO is a diode laser that cuts back the gums to make the teeth appear longer, thus creating a more even, balanced-looking smile. This laser dentistry procedure is a dramatic improvement from the previous more invasive procedure. Soft tissue recontouring with the PICASSO laser is completed in less time, with less pain and blood loss, and a reduced chance of infection. This technology can also be used to treat apthous ulcers (a type of mouth sore), help with certain orthodontic problems, do less painful biopsies and even help with every day fillings, crowns and bridges.

The Wand® by Compudent™

Many patients fear needles even more than they fear the drill. For some, just the sight of the syringe can cause panic. To make all patients comfortable, Dr. Peter D. Gold utilizes the Wand®, a computer-controlled pen that injects anesthetic into the gums and mouth in a stealthy manner. Operated by a foot pedal, the computer base of the unit measures the anesthetic while Dr. Gold places the attached pen on the gum where the procedure will take place. The pen, which has a tiny needle at its tip, administers the anesthetic quickly and painlessly. The pen and the computer base look harmless; indeed, most patients don't even know it's a needle.

DIAGNOdent®

DIAGNOdent®, another device used in laser dentistry at our Schenectady office, makes visits a less stressful experience for the patient. Through the use of a handheld laser, DIAGNOdent® uses fluorescent light to detect decay and accurately diagnose cavities in their earliest stages. DIAGNOdent® also makes it easier to diagnose cavities that form beneath the surface of the tooth. Because it scans the whole tooth-inside and out-it provides a reading that is shown to be more accurate than x-rays and conventional methods alone. Since cavities are caught earlier, they can be treated immediately and painlessly, often before the need for extensive treatments and procedures such as root canals and dental crowns arises.

VELscope® (Oral Cancer Screening)

VELscope® is a non-invasive technology that accurately detects oral cancer when used in conjunction with a conventional oral cancer screening exam. Oral cancer-a form of cancer that can affect anyone-often turns deadly because it isn't detected until it has progressed to its later stages.

The innovative VELscope® technology gives Dr. Peter D. Gold and his staff a better view of your mouth so they can properly assess and diagnose oral cancer in its earliest stages. In comparison to healthy tissue, unhealthy and potentially cancerous tissue appears dark, alerting Dr. Gold to examine the area further. VELscope® allows Dr. Gold to see changes in the mouth that he would not normally see using only traditional screening methods. This early detection allows Dr. Gold to devise a plan to treat the cancerous tissue before it spreads elsewhere.

Advanced Sterilization Standards

Dr. Gold cares about your safety and employs the latest, most stringent standards of sterilization. We closely monitor the sterilization practices, from ultrasonic cleaners to disposable tools, so you can be sure that every instrument used during your procedure is sterile. CAESY Patient Education

Patient education is important. After all, the more you know and understand about maintaining your oral health, the more likely you are to practice good habits that promote it. Studies have shown that good oral health contributes significantly to your overall physical health.

For this reason, Dr. Gold uses CAESY, a patient education system that consists of a series of interactive DVDs on constant rotation in each room of the practice. CAESY avoids medical jargon and explains each procedure in laymen's terms so that anyone can understand the procedure and what is expected before and after the visit.
